The Elaphiti archipelago comprises fourteen islands, yet only three — Koločep, Lopud, and Šipan — carry permanent settlements, their combined population hovering near eight hundred. The name derives from the Greek élafos, meaning deer, though no archaeological record confirms the animals ever roamed these limestone outcrops. What the islands do carry is an unbroken canopy of Aleppo pine and Mediterranean oak, forests so dense that nineteenth-century Ragusan shipwrights harvested timber here for the republic's merchant fleet. Today the trees reach the waterline, their roots clinging to karst cliffs that drop vertically into the Adriatic. Koločep, the nearest island to Dubrovnik, spans less than three square kilometres and forbids all motor vehicles. Two villages anchor opposite coasts — Donje Čelo facing the mainland, Gornje Čelo tucked into the southern shore — connected by a footpath that winds through olive groves planted during Venetian rule. Lopud, the middle island, once held forty churches and a population of four thousand; plague and economic collapse reduced both by the eighteenth century, leaving behind Renaissance chapels and a fortress ruin visible from the harbour. The island's northern bay, Šunj, is the only sandy beach in the Dubrovnik archipelago, a shallow crescent where eel grass meadows extend two hundred metres offshore. Šipan, the largest and easternmost, produces wine from plavac mali vines trained along stone terraces. Fifteen abandoned summer villas dot its interior, their baroque loggias and enclosed gardens built by Ragusan nobility who fled the city's summer heat. An Elaphite Islands cruise from Dubrovnik departs the old port before mid-morning, tracing a route that island-hops westward across open water. Most operators schedule stops at all three inhabited islands, layering swimming breaks with village walks and a midday meal served on deck or ashore. The Blue Cave on Koločep — a sea-level grotto where refracted sunlight turns the water sapphire — appears on select itineraries, accessible only by small tender. Return crossings land back in Dubrovnik by late afternoon, the Walls and Lovrijenac fortress backlit as the boat rounds Lokrum. The islands remain car-free, their trails and waterfronts walkable end to end, a deliberate quiet that persists even during high season.
